Food for Thought

Sharpen your mindset

โ

โ€˜If you want to increase your success rate, double your failure rate.โ€™

Thomas Watson Sr.

Mindset: Failure is not something to be feared, but something to be embraced. Failure is a sign that you are trying new things, learning from your mistakes, and growing as a person. Failure is the stepping stone to success, not the opposite of it.

Example: The founders of Slack started out as a gaming company called Tiny Speck, which created a multiplayer online game called Glitch. However, the game failed to attract enough players and revenue, and the company had to shut it down in 2012. Instead of giving up, the founders realized that they had created a useful internal communication tool while developing the game, and decided to pivot to that. They launched Slack in 2013 as a cloud-based collaboration platform, and it quickly became one of the most popular and fastest-growing software products in history. Today, Slack has over 12 million daily active users and is valued at more than $20 billion.

Action item: Today, you can increase your failure rate by taking a small risk that you have been avoiding. Maybe it's sending an email to a potential client, asking for feedback from a colleague, or launching a new feature on your website. Whatever it is, don't let fear of failure stop you. Instead, see it as an opportunity to learn and grow. Remember, the more you fail, the more you succeed.

The Weekly Pulse

Tech, AI, and business news worth your time

Brief: OpenAI introduces GPTBot, a new web crawler that will collect public data from websites to train its next generation of AI systems, including the trademarked GPT-5. The web crawler will respect the opt-out preferences of web publishers and remove sensitive information from the scraped data, according to OpenAI.

Takeaway: This announcement shows OpenAI's ambition to create more powerful and capable generative AI tools for the future, but also raises some ethical and privacy concerns about the consent and use of web data. OpenAI may be shifting away from its original vision of transparency and AI safety, as it competes with other players in the hyper-competitive AI race.

Brief: Netflix releases a new iOS app called Game Controller that will allow subscribers to play games on their TVs, signaling its intention to expand its gaming offerings beyond mobile devices. The app is currently in beta and does not support any games or TV apps yet, but Netflix executives have confirmed the company is exploring cloud gaming as a way to offer games on any device.

Takeaway: Netflix's move into TV gaming is a bold strategy to differentiate itself from other streaming services and to tap into the lucrative gaming market. By offering games as part of its existing subscription, Netflix could attract and retain more customers who are looking for more entertainment options. Netflix could also leverage its original content and IP to create exclusive and immersive games that complement its shows and movies.

Brief: Recursion, a biotech company, used artificial intelligence and supercomputers to predict an unprecedented number of new possible chemical interactions that might lead to a myriad of effective drugs. The company combined a database of 15,000 human proteins from AlphaFold2, an AI product of Google's DeepMind, with another containing 36 billion molecules. A supercomputer and cloud computing power from Nvidia were then used to crunch the massive trove of data.

Takeaway: This accomplishment shows how Silicon Valley and the biotech industry are growing closer and how AI-enabled drug discovery is a promising field that could change medicine. Recursion's method of drug discovery is an effort to go after the "low-hanging fruit" of possibilities, instead of targeting a specific disease or protein. Recursion is one of a growing number of companies that are aiming to upend the way drug discovery works and potentially create new opportunities for creativity and efficiency across various industries and domains.

Brief: Google introduces Project IDX, a browser-based development environment that leverages AI to assist developers in building full-stack web and multiplatform apps. Project IDX is based on Visual Studio Code - Open Source and integrates with Codey, Google's PaLM 2-based foundation model for programming tasks. It also supports various frameworks and languages, and offers cloud-based hosting and simulation features.

Takeaway: Project IDX is Google's attempt to offer a competitive edge to developers who want to create modern and scalable applications using the latest AI technologies. By providing a cloud-based IDE that integrates with its own AI model, Google aims to enhance the productivity and creativity of developers, as well as to showcase its own AI capabilities. Project IDX could also attract more developers to use Google's cloud services and products, and increase its market share in the booming web and multiplatform app industry.

Brief: Nvidia, the leader in the AI chip market, announced the GH200, a new chip that combines a powerful GPU with 141 GB of memory and a 72-core ARM CPU. The GH200 is designed to run large AI models faster and more efficiently than ever before and will be available from the second quarter of next year.

Takeaway: The GH200 is Nvidia's latest attempt to stay ahead of its competitors in the hyper-competitive AI race, where demand for GPU capacity is outstripping supply. The new chip could enable new applications of generative AI, a branch of AI that can create new content and data from existing ones, such as text, images, and audio. Generative AI could unlock new opportunities for creativity and innovation across various industries and domains.

Brief: Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and X owner Elon Musk have been feuding over a potential cage match for months, but the fight has not materialized yet. Zuckerberg says he's "ready to fight" but Musk has not agreed on a date and needs time to recover from shoulder surgery.

Takeaway: This news shows how two of the most influential and controversial tech billionaires are using their social media platforms to hype up a possible public spectacle that could generate a lot of attention and revenue. However, it also raises questions about the credibility and ethics of their statements and actions, as well as the impact they have on their respective companies and industries.

What If?

The business idea you should steal

๐Ÿฆ€๐Ÿค— CrabFace

(Rust + ML APIs)

What? A machine learning framework for Rust that uses Hugging Face's APIs and bindings to perform various ML tasks such as natural language processing, computer vision, and speech recognition.

How? Use Hugging Face's Rust bindings and APIs to access pre-trained models, datasets, pipelines, tokenizers, etc. The framework should also use Rust's features such as memory safety, concurrency, and performance, to enable latency critical inference and memory management.

Why? This idea can help Rust developers leverage the power and popularity of Hugging Face's ML tools and resources, as well as benefit from Rust's advantages over other languages for ML development. It can also contribute to the growth and diversity of the Rust ecosystem and community. The global machine-learning market size is projected to grow from USD 8.43 billion in 2019 to USD 117.19 billion by 2027.
